Ukrainian Railways reported a tragic incident during a recent evacuation on the Odesa railway, resulting in the death of a train conductor and injuries to a passenger.
According to a statement from the press service of Ukrainian Railways, the conductor was fatally struck by an oncoming train while passengers were being evacuated. The incident occurred as the train made a stop, and the conductor was assisting with the evacuation process.
In addition to the fatality, a passenger sustained moderate injuries. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway.
Ukrainian Railways also noted that overnight, there was another attack on railway assets, specifically targeting a suburban train locomotive on the Dnipro railway. Fortunately, due to timely evacuation procedures, neither passengers nor the locomotive crew were harmed.
The railway operator emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols during evacuations. Passengers are advised to:
- avoid creating crowds or panic;
- ensure the safety of their path when boarding or alighting, particularly checking for oncoming trains;
- leave oversized items behind during evacuation;
- assist fellow passengers in need;
- supervise children and maintain a calm demeanor;
- quickly move to a safe distance from the train or to designated areas as instructed by railway personnel during an evacuation.
Ukrainian Railways has increased monitoring of potential threats in collaboration with defense forces and will initiate evacuations in response to immediate threats from enemy drones or other attack methods near train routes. Ongoing training and practical sessions for train crews are enhancing safety protocols in light of these incidents.
