A significant fire erupted at an oil refinery in Ufa, Russia, during the night of April 2, following a drone attack. Residents reported being awakened by the sound of explosions, which were linked to the incident in an industrial area of the city.
In response to the drone threat, local authorities declared an air safety regime, leading to the temporary suspension of operations at the nearby airport. The head of Bashkortostan confirmed the attack, stating that several drones were intercepted before reaching the refinery.
According to the official, debris from one of the drones fell into the industrial zone, but there were no reported injuries. Firefighting efforts were underway at the facility, where a critical primary oil processing unit, AVT-5, was reported to be ablaze.
Serhiy Sternenko, a volunteer and advisor to the Minister of Defense, indicated that the refinery targeted was Bashneft-Novoil, located approximately 1,400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The Bashneft-Ufa Oil Refinery is a key asset of Bashneft, which is part of Rosneft, one of Russia’s largest oil companies.
This refinery plays a crucial role in processing oil from Western Siberia, as well as Bashkir oil and gas condensate, making it an important component of Russia’s oil refining infrastructure.
