Danish Prime Minister Emphasizes Need for Enhanced Military Support for Ukraine

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reiterated the importance of providing Ukraine with the necessary military support to combat Russian aggression. During her recent statements, she emphasized that there are still significant limitations on the types of weapons that can be used in Ukraine, which she believes hinder the country’s ability to achieve victory.

Frederiksen stated, “There are still red lines regarding the weapons that can be used in Ukraine. This discussion has been ongoing for nearly four years. You cannot win a war simply by carrying some weapons on your back. I believe we must give Ukraine everything it needs.” Her remarks highlight the ongoing debate about military assistance and the complexities involved in international support for Ukraine.

The Prime Minister also reflected on the historical context, suggesting that had Ukraine been granted NATO membership several years ago, the current conflict might have been avoided. She remarked, “We cannot rewrite history, but if we had given Ukraine NATO membership a few years ago, we would not have this situation; we would have resolved the problem.”

In related developments, the United States and NATO established the PURL program in the summer of 2025 to facilitate continued military support for Ukraine. This initiative allows the U.S. to sell weapons and technology to Ukraine, funded by NATO allies and partners, particularly in the event of a halt in free aid from the U.S.

As part of this program, approximately $5 billion was allocated for weapon purchases in 2025. Recently, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced that member countries plan to raise $15 billion for Ukraine in 2026. This shift comes as European military assistance to Ukraine increased by 67% in 2025, effectively compensating for a drastic 99% reduction in support from the U.S., according to the Ukraine Support Tracker.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called for increased military support for Ukraine, stressing the limitations on current weaponry. She also suggested that earlier NATO membership for Ukraine could have prevented the ongoing conflict, while outlining the new PURL program aimed at sustaining military aid amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
