Donald Trump’s special representative, Steve Witkoff, proposed that Ukraine seek exemption from US tariffs for 10 years instead of receiving long-range Tomahawk missiles.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the publication, in October Volodymyr Zelenskyi arrived in Washington with the hope of receiving Tomahawk cruise missiles, which the Ukrainian command planned to use to strike Russian oil refineries in order to strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position.
However, a day before Zelensky’s visit, Donald Trump had a conversation with Putin and then refused to provide the missiles.
Steve Witkoff allegedly told the Ukrainian side that a few missiles would not give a significant result, and instead advised to request the abolition of US tariffs for a ten-year period. He emphasized that, in his opinion, this could significantly strengthen the Ukrainian economy.
Witkoff told the newspaper that his job is to come up with new ideas and look for opportunities to make deals.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in October spent a phone conversation with Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov, during which he gave advice on how Russia could best present its proposals for a “peace deal” to Donald Trump, and how the Russian dictator could best flatter the US president.
