Senior White House officials met with telecommunications company executives to discuss a “significant cyber espionage campaign targeting the sector,” the White House said.
About this informs Reuters.
In November, US authorities said hackers linked to China had intercepted surveillance data intended for US law enforcement after breaching an unspecified number of telecommunications companies.
Sen. Mark Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in an interview with the Washington Post on Thursday that the hack was “the worst telecommunications hack in the history of our country — by far.”
The White House meeting was hosted by national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
“The meeting provided an opportunity to hear from leaders in the telecommunications sector about how the US government can partner with and support the private sector to strengthen defenses against sophisticated attacks by nation states,” the White House said in a statement.
Beijing has repeatedly denied claims by the US government and other countries that it used hackers to break into foreign computer systems.
