Among the possible options were Mykola, Petryk, Hetman, Pager, Donut, Schnitzel, Sirko, Frodo, Zimko, Torpy, Watermelon and even Penguin.
As reported by the National Antarctic Science Center on Facebook, the team of the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Station decided to name the first-born Weddell this year in honor of the Ukrainian sea drone – SeaBaby, which means “sea baby” in English.
The cub was named after the biologist Svitozara Davydenko, who was the first to find it. Thus, the baby’s name is SeaBaby Svitozarovych.
In total, scientists received almost 400 suggestions for a possible name, including Mykola, Petryk, Hetman, Pager, Donut, Schnitzel, Sirko, Frodo, Zimko, Torpy, Kavunchik and even Penguin.
“Thank you very much to everyone who participated in choosing a name. Don’t be sad if you didn’t win this time – we will definitely hold contests and giveaways. By the way, SeaBaby is 10 days old today. He is actively growing on his mother’s milk and can soon start the first acquaintance with the ocean. But these seals begin independent life and nutrition in the water after the end of feeding – approximately 7 weeks after birth. So soon the “sea babies” will be not only in the Black Sea, but also in the Southern Ocean, “the polar explorers note.
Currently, in addition to SeaBaby, one more “cub” was born near the station and four more females are currently pregnant.
Curiosities from polar explorersAs UNIAN reported, recently in the Antarctic, near the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadskyi”, polar explorers recorded a large number of fur seals and an elephant seal.
Galindez Island, where the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadskyi” is located, has been almost completely covered in ice for more than a month. According to polarists, this is very important – the ice acts as a “blanket” that separates the ocean from the atmosphere.
