“I started reading the text until I came to the word” Kiev “. I did not read anymore. I ordered:” To return without consideration and no longer accept. ”
The Foreign Minister stressed that the use of the names of Ukrainian cities should correspond to Ukrainian transliteration: Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Chornobyl.
According to the minister, Ukraine has already made significant progress in the struggle for the correct writing of its place names in the world. Leading international media, governments and organizations have joined this process.
At the same time, according to Sibiga, it is time to take the next big step – to restore traditional Ukrainian names in Ukraine in Ukraine: Brest instead of Brest, Belgorod instead of Belgorod, Dobukin instead of Debrezen, etc.
He recalled that such a right is provided by the Law on the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language.
He then added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine plans to initiate a professional discussion, public discussion and interagency work to systematize the use of Ukrainian names of foreign place names.
“As in the case of correction of incorrect use by foreigners, the names of our cities and in the case of transition to Ukrainian names of foreign places are first and foremost about respect. More precisely, our self -respect as the state. Others will respect us only if we respected ourselves,” Sibiga summed up.
Kiew writing comes from the Russian name and has become generally accepted in German. However, in 2019, the most authoritative spelling guide to the spelling of the German language Duden moved from the Russian transcription of the name of the Ukrainian capital to the Ukrainian capital.
In 2018, Ukraine has launched a #KyivNotkiev campaign in the English -speaking world – since then, almost all the leading English media have changed the writing of the Ukrainian capital.
And in February 2024, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany announced the transition to the Ukrainian transcription of writing Kiev – Kyjiw instead of Kiew, as it was before.
