Canada’s finance minister also told what she was thinking when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine/ UNIAN photoCanadian Finance Minister Khrystia Freeland believes that the global plan to help Ukraine finance its military efforts with Russian assets is moving forward.“I am very sure that Ukraine will start receiving money in the coming months. At this time, we are talking about technical points,” she assured in an interview on the “Power Play” podcast for Politico.
Politico recalled that after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, countries around the world froze approximately $280 billion of Russian sovereign assets, imposing sanctions on them. In particular, Freeland was the main figure in persuading the allies to take such a step.
“This summer, the G7 countries, including Canada, the United States and Japan, finally agreed to a plan to use the proceeds of frozen assets to provide Ukraine with a $50 billion loan to finance its war effort. Freeland was also a driving force behind the move, using relationships with key global players , including US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, to make this possible,” the article noted.
The publication emphasized that such a struggle is personal for Freeland, because her pedigree is connected with Ukraine, where she worked as a journalist during the collapse of the USSR. Therefore, she set herself the goal of enlisting the support of her partners in order to protect Ukraine from the Russian Federation.
Freeland also told “Power Play” that she was one of the few people in the G7 government who was not surprised that Kyiv did not fall during the first week of the war.
“In February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion, it was a universally accepted truth that Kyiv would not stand. Maybe a week, maybe two weeks – three from the outside. Really smart military, really smart analysts were absolutely sure that it would, and I didn’t. I really believed that the Ukrainian people had the determination and social cohesion to resist and resist successfully. And that’s what we saw them do,” the politician emphasized.
In addition, the Canadian minister emphasized that she was surprised by the steadfast position of the West and its allies.
“The support turned out to be deeper and longer than I feared at the beginning. After all, Ukrainians are not asking the British, they are not asking Canadians to fight there and die. They are doing it themselves… and they are making the world safer,” Freeland assured.
Canada and Ukraine – the latest newsAs UNIAN reported, a group of Ukrainian pilots arrived in Canada earlier and will undergo a training course in fighter jets. In particular, Ukrainian pilots will undergo training according to the initial program for fighter pilots. The course will last 6 months, during which 20 hours of “flights” on a simulator and 50 hours of flights on a real aircraft are provided.
It was also reported that Canada will transfer 80,840 additional CRV-7 rocket engines and 1,300 warheads to Ukraine. These engines are known to have been decommissioned and previously used by the Royal Canadian Air Force on CF-18 combat aircraft.
