The BBC, together with the Russian publication “Mediazon” and volunteers, established the names of 80,973 Russian soldiers who died during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Details: It is noted that the analysis was carried out on the basis of open data – such as photos from the funeral, information about the war dead on local government websites, news in the media, publications by relatives or posts in other sources if accompanied by photos of the burial, etc.
The media concluded that there is now a rapid increase in casualties among Russians who signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation after the full-scale invasion. Many of them die within 2-4 weeks after being sent to the front, some – after a few days.
“Their share in the total mass continues to grow and now makes up 22% of the total number of confirmed losses on the Russian side. A year ago – in November 2023 – volunteers accounted for only 14% of the total number of losses.
The share of convicts sent to the front from places of deprivation of liberty, on the contrary, is decreasing. In November 2023, they accounted for 26% of all losses, and now – only 18%. But units created from prisoners are still on the front lines and take on part of the combat load,” the Russian service of the BBC writes.
Currently, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation are the leaders in terms of the number of confirmed losses.
The latter appeared on this list after the beginning of mobilization and mass recruitment to the front from the colonies, as the region has many industrial enterprises and a number of large penal colonies.
“Tatarstan entered the top three regions with the highest number of confirmed casualties in 2024. And this is primarily due to the active work of local volunteers who collect data on the dead. Friends and relatives of war participants send and publish information about the dead in local communities, often reporting about those cases that were not publicized by the local authorities,” the newspaper writes.
Journalists note that in connection with this, the figure of the dead from Tatarstan can be as close as possible to the real number of dead people from this republic.
At the same time, the data on other regions is much less complete, since there are not so active volunteers there, and the local authorities often put pressure on journalists and relatives of the dead, urging them not to write about the losses.
In per capita terms, Tyva, Buryatia and Altai are the leaders in the number of losses, and the lowest figures are in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
“Our calculations show that a man from Tyva is nine times more likely to die in the war than a resident of Moscow. At least 52% of all the dead are people who were not connected to the Russian army at the time of the start of the war,” he writes. edition.
Journalists note that the real number of Russians who joined the army from “citizens” and died at the front is much higher, since analysts could not determine exactly how exactly 28% of the dead they established got to the front.
But due to the fact that the obituaries of most of them are accompanied by photographs of men in civilian clothes, the journalists assume that they could get to the front through mobilization or voluntarily signed contracts.
Prehistory:
- Earlier, The New York Times reported that Russia continues to suffer huge losses in its war of aggression against Ukraine. In particular, in October, the number of killed and wounded occupiers was the highest since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. At the same time, journalists emphasized that the Russian army can hardly be called exhausted, because in the first half of 2024, the Russian Federation managed to mobilize about 900 people every day.
- As of the morning of November 29, the General Staff of the Armed Forces estimated Russian losses at 738,000 killed and wounded.
- In November, The Economist wrote that Ukraine could lose 60,000 to 100,000 soldiers killed in nearly three years of full-scale Russian invasion, and another 400,000 soldiers could be seriously injured.
- In February 2024, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died during the full-scale invasion of Russia.
