Maternova says that as a result of the information made public by NABU and SAP, there have already been decisions on the resignation of the current and former ministers of energy and Ukrainian sanctions against two key people in the scheme.
“And it is important that the investigation continues, with the support of the authorities. This is a strong signal that Ukrainian independent institutions are working and that corruption will not be tolerated, even among top officials. Especially at a time when so many Ukrainians are sitting for hours without electricity and in the cold,” said the diplomat.
She recalled the words of the chief diplomat of the EU, Kaya Callas, that the timing of the disclosure of the “scheme” seemed unfortunate for Ukraine, and of course it is a serious scandal.
Maternova’s direct speech: “Corruption exists in many countries. It’s like a cancer that eats away at society from the inside. But it’s important how quickly and decisively the government reacts. Ukraine’s reaction currently shows determination. Preserving the independence of the anti-corruption infrastructure is key to Ukraine’s movement towards the EU. And it also plays a key role in proving that Ukraine is determined to seriously fight corruption.”
Prehistory:
- The European Commission believes that the disclosure of the corruption scheme is evidence of the effectiveness of the anti-corruption bodies of Ukraine.
- European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that corruption is widespread throughout Europe, but the most important thing is how they react to it, and expressed confidence in the correctness of Ukraine’s anti-corruption course with the support of the EU.
