The police chief of a small town in central Mexico killed himself as troops approached to arrest him as part of anti-corruption raids, reports UNN with reference to the Associated Press.

In the town of Texcaltitlan, the police chief committed suicide with his own weapon as Marines, National Guardsmen and soldiers surrounded him, intending to detain him on unspecified charges.

In addition, the military arrested the mayor of the nearby town of Amanalko on various charges, along with the police chief and another local official. In the city of Tehupilco, located further south, the chief of police was also detained.

According to the Federal Department of Public Security, the seven detained officials had ties to criminal gangs and are suspected of extortion, kidnapping and murder. It is not yet clear whether they have been formally charged.
