On Friday, November 29, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Oleksandr Drapaty as the new commander of the Ground Forces.
NV tells what is known about Major General Drapat, who replaced Oleksandr Pavlyuk.
With the beginning of the full-scale war, Drapaty headed the Kherson operational group. In March 2022, he led the defense of Kryvyi Rih, when the occupiers managed to stop and stabilize the front line. Later, he headed the operational group Kherson and was one of the commanders who managed the liberation of the right bank of Kherson.
Drapaty received the rank of major general in October 2024. Previously, he was responsible for repelling the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region, which began in early May 2024.

After the appointment of Oleksandr Syrskyi as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces in February 2024, Drapaty became the deputy chief of the General Staff, responsible for the training of the military.
He gained wide popularity back in 2014, when in August, in extremely difficult conditions, he managed to withdraw units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the encirclement in the Izvaryny area on the border with Russia.
Drapaty is also known for the deoccupation of Mariupol in 2014. At that time, still being the commander of the 2nd battalion of the 72nd OMBr, he and his unit drove to Mariupol in armored vehicles in June 2014, demolishing separatist roadblocks on their way.
Tanks and armored personnel carriers strengthened the units that repelled the assaults of the Russian invaders, and managed to free the hostages as well.
In 2016, Drapaty was appointed commander of the 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade.
