Despite the unsuccessful result, the central defender of the “blue and yellow” Ilya Zabarny established a historic achievement – he became the youngest captain of the national team in official matches.
Previously, this title belonged to Oleksandr Zinchenko, who led the national team to the field with the captain’s armband for the first time in the World Cup 2022 qualification match against the same France – at the age of 24 years and 99 days. Today, Zabarny broke this record, becoming the captain at 23 years and 74 days.
If we take into account not only official meetings, but also friendly matches, one of the youngest captains in the history of Ukraine remains Serhiy Diryavka, who received the armband in a sparring game with Israel in April 1993, when he was only 22 years and 9 days old.
