US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he was not forewarned of Israel’s plans to attack Hezbollah’s central headquarters in Beirut, but spoke to his Israeli counterpart when the operation had already begun.
This is reported by Reuters.
The Secretary of Defense of the United States refused to give any assessment of the strike against the background of media reports about the probable elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Instead, Austin stressed that he would speak with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant again “soon” for an update.
“We had no prior warning. My conversation with Minister Gallant took place at a time when the operation was actually underway. As you know, this operation took place only a few hours ago and they are still evaluating its results. I do not have any additional information or details to provide you at this time,” the Pentagon chief said.
Probable liquidation of Hassan Nasrallah – what is known
On September 27, the Israel Defense Forces announced that they had struck the main headquarters of the Hezbollah group in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
A senior US official confirmed to ABC News that the target of the airstrike was Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
The AFP agency, citing a source close to Hezbollah, reported that Nasrallah “in order.”
Israel’s Channel 12 later reported that Hassan Nasrallah was likely killed in an IDF strike on the group’s underground headquarters.
