EES will register entrances and trips, passport data, fingerprints and the face of non-EU members who travel for short-term stay in the EU Member State.

Thanks to this system, the relevant authorities, from the border guards to the law enforcement agencies, will have access to data that will allow to check the identity of a third country citizen and information about whether he or she adheres to the period of stay in the Schengen area. As a consequence, EES will significantly reduce the likelihood of fraud with identification data and exceeding the stay in the Schengen area.
Prehistory:
- On July 8, MEPs of the European Parliament with 572 votes for “supported the gradual implementation of Entry/Exit System.
- The regulation shall come into force on the third day after its publication in the EU’s official Gazette. EES will take effect gradually from the date to be determined by the European Commission.
- The EES system had to work in the European Union since November 10 last year, but at the request of a number of member states, its implementation was postponed.
