The capture of a part of the Kursk region by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, although not fundamentally, changed the course of the war, these territories can become a trump card for Kyiv in any future negotiations with Moscow.
Forbes writes about this, analyzing the operation of Ukrainian forces on the territory of the Russian Federation.
According to military observer David Ax, the day before the first Ukrainian troops breached the Russian border, the Russian garrison in the Kursk region had 18 BM-21 rocket launchers, 98 barrel artillery pieces, and 71 mortars.
“This is a colossal number. The firepower was on the Russian side,” Forbes quotes Ukrainian drone operator Kriegsforscher.
This amount of artillery, correctly deployed against the Armed Forces, could be decisive for the Russians. According to the operator, with good coordination, any breakthrough becomes practically impossible. However, the enemy’s artillery was not ready – both because of poor intelligence and because of the confidence of the Russians that the armed forces would never attack the Kursk region.
“The Ukrainians moved faster than the ill-prepared Russian artillery could adapt,” David Ax writes.
The Russian artillery was also hampered by the fact that the Armed Forces jammed radio communications, filled the sky over the Kursk region with drones and fired from highly mobile fire artillery missile systems. The Ukrainians in the Kursk region had an advantage in mobility, in many cases the armed forces did not attack Russian trenches and combat positions, but simply bypassed them. In a matter of hours, Ukrainian forces advanced by kilometers.
The author of the publication emphasizes that the Russians had the firepower to defend the Kursk region, but there was no intelligence and coordination. At the same time, the Ukrainians ignored the clear artillery advantage of the Russian Federation in the Kursk region.
“The Russian counteroffensive weakened the Ukrainian performance, but not much. The front line has stabilized, and both sides are digging in,” the author of the publication emphasizes.
The military analyst also expressed confidence that Russian artillery in the Kursk region is now correctly aimed and coordinated. According to the observer, if the Ukrainians are going to repeat their success at Kursk and again oppose ill-prepared artillery, “they will have to do it somewhere other than Kursk.”

On September 11, the analytical portal DeepState reported that Russian troops began active assault operations in the Kursk region and are trying to attack Ukrainian forces from several directions.
On September 12, Ukrainian troops, with the support of drones and tanks, broke through a new section of the Russian border west of Ukrainian-controlled territories in the Kursk region.
