Details: A Category 4 hurricane is approaching Big Bend County in northern Florida with sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h). The eye of the hurricane, around which the most dangerous zone is located, will reach land at 11:00 PM EST (6:00 AM Kyiv). The wind speed at the time of Helena’s landfall will reach 215 km/h.
The National Weather Service warns that the most dangerous phenomenon during this hurricane is storm surge, when water in the Gulf rises above normal levels. Water is expected to rise up to 20 feet (6 meters) along the Florida coast. Storm surge will push water 20 miles (32 km) inland.
Hurricane Helena has closed schools and businesses in many counties of the state, as well as closed airports and canceled flights.
Officials warn that the storm’s catastrophic wind gusts could cause power outages that “likely last for days, if not weeks.” It is already known that more than half a million consumers in Florida were left without power.
Despite warnings and calls from authorities, hundreds of people in Taylor County did not evacuate before the hurricane. Authorities asked residents who had not evacuated to email their whereabouts and people sent hundreds of emails.
