According to The Guardian, judging by his four visits to Moscow, he generally treats the Russian Federation like any other country, and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin like any other world leader.

In particular, Witkoff told the interviewer Tucker Carlson that he is sure that Russia will not want to seize new territories in Europe when it receives four regions of Ukraine.

“I think that there is such an idea: ‘We should all be like Winston Churchill – the Russians are going to go all over Europe’ – I think it’s absurd,” Trump’s special envoy emphasized.

Witkoff also added:

“I don’t consider Putin a bad person. It’s a complicated situation, this war and all the circumstances that led to it. You know, it’s never just one person, right?”.

In his opinion, Russia sincerely seeks peace, and Trump also holds the same benevolent view of Putin. In particular, US Vice President JD Vance ridiculed the idea that Putin has expansionist plans.

According to him, the Russian dictator is not Hitler.

What this US position means for Europe”For Europe, this means that no matter how often it tries to push Trump away from Russia, he always returns to his natural sympathy for Putin. Every time Europe feels that it is on the verge of convincing Trump that Russia is an aggressor who threatens the security of Europe and, as a result, the United States, Trump gives Putin one more chance, “two more weeks”, one more phone call. Trump’s only unshakable conviction is that Ukraine cannot win the war and must minimize its losses,” The Guardian emphasized.

At the same time, former French President Francois Hollande said:

“We are living through a historic and dramatic moment. Historic because this plan not only means the capitulation of Ukraine, but also the transfer of Europe under the care of the Russian-American condominium. Dramatic because for Ukraine it means the final loss of a third of its territory and does not provide any security guarantees that would protect it from further Russian aggression. It is also dramatic because this plan is nothing more than Trump’s acceptance of Vladimir Putin’s demands, which reduces Europe to a role besieged observer”.

However, according to journalists, Europe is now trained to respond to Trump’s periodic attempts to exonerate and reward Putin.

Europe’s reaction to the US “peace plan”.As for the “peace plan” of the USA, three factors helped Europe in this matter. First, the project was so one-sided and prescriptive about the security of Europe that it was impossible to defend it.

“Instead of offering an alternative, the Europeans decided to simply destroy the Witkoff project. The use of Trump’s plan as a starting point was intended to avoid hostility from the Americans: it was an acknowledgment of the legitimacy of Trump’s efforts,” The Guardian added.

Secondly, the disputes within the US administration could no longer be hidden, namely the enmity between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vance.

“This helped the Atlanticist wing in the Senate, which was already worried about the drop in the president’s rating, to find its strength and voice again. This, in turn, prompted Vance to make several angry attacks on Congress,” the publication recalled.

Then he said:

“There is an illusion that simply by providing more money, more weapons, or imposing more sanctions, victory can be achieved. Peace will not be achieved by failed diplomats or politicians living in a fantasy world. It can be achieved by intelligent people living in the real world.”

Such words left Rubio teetering on the edge of remaining loyal to the unpredictable president, but making it clear to US senators that this was not the US plan.

In the end, Europe remained united, despite minor disputes over the roles of France, Germany, and Great Britain.

“Europe must now realize that it must solve the Russian issue on its own. Unlike Alaska, this time the United States was involved in signing Russian plans to remake Europe in the interests of Russia. Thus, according to the French historian Françoise Tom, the United States has become complicit in the destruction of international law,” according to The Guardian.

In turn, some figures such as Kallas insist that the Russian Federation can be pushed to the point where it will run out of funds, especially if Europe finds a legal way to provide Ukraine with a reparation loan, using the frozen assets of the Russian central bank worth 210 billion euros.

“But Europe has so often promised to take up reason. Perhaps its worst enemy is not Russia, but inertia,” the publication concluded.

Europe and the US “peace plan” – what is knownAs UNIAN wrote, earlier the European Parliament sharply criticized Trump’s “peace plan”. In particular, the MEPs pointed to the ambivalence of Washington’s policy, which “impedes the achievement of lasting peace.”

In addition, the European Parliament emphasized that the peace agreement should not limit Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against new attacks.

At the same time, The Washington Post wrote that Europe is trying to speak “with one voice” when the USA and the Russian Federation are deciding the fate of Ukraine. However, as the journalists note, deep internal disunity is hidden behind the declarations of solidarity, which threatens to disrupt the European influence on the process.

The publication also emphasizes that Europe may again find itself in a situation where the USA and Russia decide its future behind closed doors – without the participation of Brussels.
