One of the sources said Witkoff and Kushner gathered information from both sides and pressured Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky to make the concessions needed to reach a deal.
“The discussion of the territory was difficult, said a source familiar with the course of the conversation. Russia is still demanding that Ukraine withdraw troops from the parts of Donbas it controls, but the US is trying to develop new ideas to resolve this issue, said a second source,” the publication said.
Another key issue was the security guarantees of Ukraine by the US. One source said the parties had made significant progress and were moving closer to an agreement, but more work needed to be done to ensure that both sides had the same interpretation of the draft security guarantees.
Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA Olha Stefanishyna told Axios that the main difficulties in the negotiations concern territorial issues and security guarantees.
“We aim to ensure that the agreed solutions are realistic, fair and sustainable,” she said.
Stefanishyna added that “negotiations will continue, and personal meetings are crucial.”
According to the publication, it is expected that Ukrainian negotiators Rustem Umyerov and Andriy Hnatov will return from Miami to Europe and on Monday will inform Zelensky in London about the US proposals.
“We need to take all the projects and brainstorm,” a Ukrainian official told Axios.
According to the publication, further negotiations and meetings with Witkoff and Kushner are expected later next week.
