According to the publication, the US promise to quickly replace the German Patriot systems is the first time when the Pentagon has contributed to the supply of weapons to Ukraine since Trump has announced at the beginning of this month that it has supported additional military supplies.
At the same time, this step also emphasized the complexity of Patriot and other weapons to Kiev, as defense production lines in the West are barely coping with the requests of Ukraine for assistance in the protection of its cities and troops from Russian aggression.
Attempting to accelerate the delivery of Patriot to Ukraine by replenishing Germany systems from the US production line corresponds to Trump’s promise to force NATO allies to pay for the US part of the value of additional weapons for Ukraine.
The initial agreement is similar to a step taken in 2024 by the administration of the previous President Joe Biden, who moved Ukraine to the first place in the queue to receive air defense directly from the United States.
As the more and more countries will be consistent with the delivery of Patriot from their arsenals to Ukraine, the Trump administration will continue to review the plans of future deliveries, giving priority to these allies, the American high -ranking official said.
The next week, more agreements between the US and their allies on additional weapons are likely to be concluded, the publication notes.
On Monday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset will hold a virtual meeting with other heads of defense agencies of NATO to discuss Kiev assistance.
A separate meeting with the participation of countries with Patriot systems will take place on Wednesday under the chairmanship of NATO Grinkevich, the Commander -in -Chief of European Forces.
According to the American high -ranking official, the Trump administration seeks to conclude individual agreements with NATO members about the purchase of weapons for Ukraine. The Pentagon will control this process.
These agreements will go beyond Patriot supply and include offensive and defensive weapons that NATO countries will provide Kiev and then redeem in the United States, is added to the publication.
Germany, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Canada and Finland have already pledged to support this initiative, NATO representative said. According to several European high -ranking officials, other European countries may join in Kiev as soon as the details of the plan are agreed.
At the same time, US and Europe officials warn that a critical issue is how long it takes to deliver additional weapons to Ukraine.
European capitals are waiting for Washington explanations about the types of ammunition and weapons that will be put in Ukraine, the supply schedule, and whether the US or other countries will impose restrictions on the targets against which Western ammunition can be used in Russia.
This week, Trump promised more weapons for Ukraine and threatened 100% “secondary tariffs” for Russia if Vladimir Putin disagrees the ceasefire within 50 days.
Trump said NATO member states would pay for the weapon that would be sent to Ukraine. Each Patriot battery costs more than $ 1 billion, and the system missiles cost about $ 4 million each.
At least for some of the US allies, Trump has been declared a plan to buy Europeans of US weapons for Ukraine, a surprise, uncertainty remains in the question of who will supply Patriot.
