In addition to the probable violation of the Espionage Act, which prohibits the wrongful use of national defense information, Lee is also accused of attempting to export controlled technical data without a license that is a violation of the law on weapons export control. According to the court documents, the government requires it to be delayed without the right to release.
According to the Ministry of Justice, Lee first appeared in the Federal Court on Wednesday, and it is still unknown whether he hired a lawyer.
CNN appealed to the US Army for comment.
Roman Rozhavsky, Deputy Director of the FBI counterintelligence department, said on Wednesday that Lee provided information to the person he considered an employee of Russian intelligence in exchange for Russian citizenship.
“Today’s arrest is a warning for anyone who thinks of betraying the United States, especially for servicemen who swore to defend our homeland,” Rozhavsky added.
The US Army Counterintelligence Commander, Brigadier General Son F. Schrychong, called the arrest a “alarming reminder of a serious threat” facing the US Army.
