According to the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, Ukraine must first join the EU and only then can it become a member of NATO.

He stated this during a speech at the Helsinki Security Forum.

Answering the question whether it is realistic to expect that Ukraine will become a member of NATO by the end of the year, Stubb noted that membership by the end of the year is unrealistic.

“I think that a kind of sequence will be: the first is membership in the EU, the second is membership in NATO,” he added.

At the same time, the President of Finland emphasized that Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance is realistic in the long term.

“It’s a consistent process. Russia wants to avoid NATO’s approach to its borders at any cost. They got Finland, it will get Ukraine and all those countries that want to join the Alliance,” said Stubb.
