“While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli judicial system and its requirements, I believe that this ‘case’ against Bibi (Netanyahu’s nickname. – Ed.), who has long fought alongside me, including against a very strong adversary of Israel, Iran, is political, unjustified persecution,” Trump wrote in a letter to Herzog.
In response, the office said that anyone seeking a presidential pardon must submit a formal request in accordance with established procedures.
During Trump’s visit to Israel in October he also called on Herzog to pardon the prime minister in a speech to parliament.
We will remind:
- In October, Trump and representatives of Egypt, Qatar and Turkey signed a document on ending the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.
- Israel and Hamas later accused each other of violating agreements brokered by the Trump administration and Middle Eastern mediators. After that, the US held negotiations with the Israeli side.
- At the end of October, the US president became defense of Israel’s decision on renewed strikes against the Hamas group in the Gaza Strip.
