“It is clear that, on the one hand, the President of the United States believes that he can promote a ‘peace plan’ that he would like to implement and which, at least initially, does not involve the participation of Europe,” said Leo XIV.
“But the presence of Europe is important, and that first plan was also changed because of comments from Europe,” he added.
The Pope separately mentioned Italy, whose role in the peace process, according to him, “can be very important.”
“Culturally and historically, Italy has the ability to act as a mediator in the conflict that exists between different parties: Ukraine, Russia, the United States,” he said, adding that the Holy See could encourage such mediation.
Intelligence data at the disposal of the North Atlantic Alliance do not indicate Vladimir Putin’s readiness for a peace agreement.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Johann Wadeful, accused the owner of the Kremlin of not wanting to negotiate the end of the war with Ukraine.
