“Ambassadors have just given the green light to facilitate the suspension of EU visa liberalization. November 17: EU ministers will seal the agreement, November 26: signing ceremony in parliament, December: entry into force. Soon after this, the decision may be used against some holders of Georgian passports,” the journalist wrote.
Prehistory:
- On October 7, the European Parliament voted for a draft law introducing a simpler mechanism for suspending the visa-free regime for countries that pose a threat to EU security or violate human rights.
- The reform affects 61 countries whose citizens can currently travel to the Schengen area without visas for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.
- To date, the EU visa-free regime has been canceled for only one country – Vanuatu.
- Currently, the European Union is considering the option of suspending the visa-free regime for Georgia in order to put pressure on the Georgian authorities, which have chosen an anti-democratic course.
