The sentencing of US President-elect Donald Trump in the hush money case has been postponed indefinitely. Judge Juan Mercan decided to postpone the hearing of the case, giving Trump’s lawyers time to justify the request to close it, writes UNN citing Politico.

Details

The sentencing of Donald Trump in the hush money case has been postponed indefinitely by a court in Manhattan. Such a decision was made on Friday by judge Juan Merchan, who is leading the trial. This was another legal victory for the newly elected US president on the way to return to the White House, the publication indicates.

Judge Merchan postponed the sentencing date, originally scheduled for November 26, to consider a request by Trump’s lawyers to dismiss the case. They argue that their client, as the president-elect, should avoid legal obstacles that could interfere with the performance of his duties. The attorneys have until Dec. 2 to file their case, while Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has until Dec. 9 to respond.

Prosecutors have opposed dismissing the case, but agree that sentencing may have to be delayed until after Trump’s term ends in January 2029. Trump’s lawyers say that even in this case, the sentencing is unacceptable, because the threat of punishment makes it difficult for him to fulfill his presidential duties.

We will remind

In May, Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to paying porn star Stormy Daniels to cover up the scandal. The sentencing was originally scheduled for the summer, but Trump pushed for it to be postponed twice. After the election victory, experts suggested that the sentencing would most likely be delayed until the end of his presidential term.
