Rütte emphasized that he expects the PURL program, which is designed for these purchases, will not stop. For this, NATO member states and partners must allocate sufficient amounts for its financing.
“I am cautiously optimistic that in December we will also fulfill this (receive an additional billion),” he emphasized.
This would mean that for 2025, the amount of funds allocated for the purchase of weapons in the United States will reach $5 billion. In addition to this, Rutte expects another $12 billion in the following year, which means that the PURL program will continue.
“By 2026, we expect to have at least 1 billion per year,” the Secretary General said.
Mark Rutte also noted that currently “about two-thirds of the Alliance participates in PURL”, without specifying the exact number. The real number, according to “EP”, is still slightly lower.
Ambassador of Ukraine to NATO as well expects another €1 billion at PURL this year.
As reported, the day before, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal discussed strengthening Ukrainian air defense with the Secretary General.
