Details: In a conversation with a journalist, Merkel insisted that Russia should not win this war, because “it is not only in the interests of Ukraine, but also in our interests that Putin does not win this war.”
She also said that as chancellor she did everything possible to prevent such an escalation.
She called Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine a flagrant violation of international law, but noted that “diplomatic decisions must always be considered in parallel.”
According to Merkel, they should not be discussed just now, but when the time is right. At the same time, she did not specify when such a time might come.
Merkel emphasized that she supports everything that the German government is doing for Ukraine, and suggested that it will not be easy for Ukraine to defeat Russia.
Prehistory:
- Recently, the chancellor released her memoirs in Germany, which is connected with her active presence in the media after almost three years of silence.
- In a recent interview with Spiegel, Merkel said that Putin had no intention of attacking Ukraine at the beginning of his presidency, and that his plan had been outlined over the years, including in view of the behavior of the West.
- She was also indignant that she was being made a “scapegoat” for the war in Ukraine.
