Details: The meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, aim to see if any momentum can be built ahead of Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister and senior nuclear negotiator, Majid Takhteravanchi, is meeting on Friday with top diplomats from Britain, Germany and France, known as the E3, after meeting with the EU’s chief coordinator on Thursday evening.
The Geneva meetings will be like a “brainstorming session” focused on concerns about how Trump will act on Iran, diplomats say.
European, Israeli and regional diplomats say the incoming Trump administration, which includes prominent Iran hawks, such as Marco Rubiowill promote the policy of “maximum pressure”. It will be aimed at weakening Iran economically – just as Trump tried to do during his first presidency.
It is also said that Trump may try to broker something like a grand deal involving regional players to resolve the many crises in the region.
Three Iranian officials said Tehran’s first priority would be to find ways to ensure the “removal of sanctions” imposed since 2018 after Trump abandoned the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.
What happened before: Since 2018, Iran has accelerated its nuclear program, limiting the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ability to monitor it.
