Currently, daily blackout schedules are used in Ukraine. However, from time to time, power companies resort to emergency power outages, which no one warns about, the company’s press service says.
“Emergency shutdowns are always unexpected. We do this only when it is necessary to immediately protect the system from overload. As soon as we receive the emergency shutdown command, we inform about it on our page and on the website,” the company explained.
On August 26, Russian troops launched a massive attack on critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, including the country’s energy sector. The Air Force noted that the Russian military launched 127 missiles and 109 attack UAVs over Ukraine. As a result of anti-aircraft combat, 201 air targets were shot down – 102 missiles and 99 attack UAVs.
Ukrenergo called the Russian attack on the Ukrainian energy system the largest since February 2022.
According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, a total of 15 regions of Ukraine were affected as a result of the attack. “Ukrenergo” introduced emergency power cuts.
Hourly blackout schedules periodically operate in Ukraine in the summer, the main reason for their application being the consequences of Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian power plants. According to Ukrenergo, the losses of the Ukrainian energy system exceed 9 GW of capacity, which is equivalent to the consumption during peak hours in the summer of the Netherlands or Finland.
