In the worst-hit state of Guerrero, which is one of Mexico’s poorest, local media reported 18 dead, many of them victims of landslides that destroyed homes. Three deaths were reported in the southern state of Oaxaca, and another child died in a river in the northern state of Michoacán.
John quickly turned into a powerful hurricanrana before covering Guerrero. The storm then dissipated but re-formed over the sea, bringing heavy rain and flooding along the coast to the north.
On Friday, the storm began to weaken and is no longer considered active.
The governor of Guerrero state, Evelyn Salgado, shared on social media photos of rescue operations in the major resort city of Acapulco, where rescuers are carrying out rescue operations using boats, jet skis and helicopters to help victims.
Residents who evacuated flooded areas on boats and surfboards called on authorities to help as the city, which is still recovering from a devastating hurricane in 2023, faces its second disaster in less than a year.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that access to the airport has been restored, and authorities continue to distribute aid to the victims.
