Reviewer: US foreign policy is just a scam / photo ua.depositphotos.comReviewer: US foreign policy is just a scam / photo ua.depositphotos.comDonald Trump’s foreign policy has turned into a personal “racket”. European leaders are humiliated, and the world responds with gifts and investments, writes the American columnist Matthew Syed in a column for The Times.

According to the analyst, US foreign policy under Trump has long lost the signs of logic or national interests and has turned into “personal extortion”, thanks to which the former president’s business empire receives benefits around the world.

Syed writes that Trump’s national security strategy, which allegedly warns of the “civilizational erasure of Europe”, looks more like a screen for a policy of pressure, blackmail and influence barter in favor of one’s own commercial interests.

Billion dollar deals, steep tariffs and sudden “improvements”The columnist reminds of the 46 percent tariffs against Vietnam – one of the key US allies in Asia. Shortly thereafter, according to Reuters, companies linked to Trump won billions of dollars in real estate deals in Vietnam, after which tariffs were suddenly more than halved.

Similar coincidences can be traced in other regions as well:

  • after large investments in Trump International projects in the UAE – the USA gave the Emirates access to the latest semiconductors;
  • Jared Kushner’s foundation received $2 billion from Saudi Arabia;
  • Gulf state entities used the WLF cryptocurrency, created by Trump, for multibillion-dollar transactions.

“Cult of personality” instead of state policySyed likens the atmosphere in the Trump administration to a “late Roman court,” where ministers applaud any statement the president makes, including statements like “I won the 2020 election.” He calls it a “cult of personality” that destroys the vestiges of institutional restraint on power.

According to the author, humiliating loyalty to Trump has become the norm not only in the US government, but also among world leaders who try to appease the president with gifts and concessions. In particular, he recalls how Switzerland, after threats of tariffs, sent a delegation with a gold bar and a Rolex watch.

Europe risks becoming a victim of pressureSyed points out that Trump is using US influence to humiliate and divide allies – for example, by supporting extreme nationalist parties in Europe immediately after trade deals.

The author also criticizes Trump’s reluctance to support Ukraine against the backdrop of long-standing business ties with Russia, citing the well-known phrase: “We have all the necessary funding from Russia.”

“The only solution is to become stronger”Syed calls on the European states to proceed from the fact that the US under Trump may not fulfill NATO guarantees, and start systematically investing in defense. Otherwise, he says, the West risks finding itself under pressure not only from Trump, but also from such players as Putin and Xi Jinping.

The material ends with a warning: if the Western countries do not strengthen themselves, they will become the objects of “ruthless extortion”, part of which, according to the author, they themselves have allowed.

“Foreign policy can only be considered as a kind of personal extortion racket,” the author concluded.

US strategy – the latest newsAs UNIAN reported, in the new strategy, US President Donald Trump and his administration blame the EU and migration for what they call an inevitable, complete cultural collapse in Europe.

This statement is contained in the US National Security Strategy, which emphasizes the existence of economic problems in Europe, but says that they are “overshadowed by the real and more severe prospect of the destruction of civilization” in the next 20 years.
