On September 25, US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump accused Volodymyr Zelenskyi of taking billions of dollars from the United States while refusing to “make a deal” to stop a full-scale Russian invasion.

Trump, who is a critic of Washington’s aid to Kiev, said Ukraine should have made concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin months before a full-scale Russian attack in February 2022.

“Any deal, the worst deal, would be better than what we have now. If they had made a bad deal, it would have been much better. They would have given in a little bit and everyone would have been alive and every building would have been built and every tower would have aged another 2,000 years,” Trump said, describing Ukraine as a state in ruins outside Kyiv that lacks soldiers.

Trump made the remarks at a campaign rally in North Carolina as Zelensky attended the UN General Assembly in New York ahead of a September 26 visit to Washington, where US President Joe Biden is expected to announce an additional aid package.

Trump has repeatedly said that Russia would never have invaded Ukraine if he were president of the United States, and that he would quickly end the war if he returned to the White House. At the same time, he has not yet provided any concrete explanation of how he will do this.

In a debate earlier this month with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Trump declined to say whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war.

Russia and Ukraine held several rounds of talks before launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022, but Kyiv rejected Moscow’s demands, which included recognition of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and Russian-controlled entities in Luhansk and Donetsk.

Trump’s comments in North Carolina appeared to be a response to Zelensky’s comments in an interview with The New Yorker, in which he said Trump “really doesn’t know how to stop a war, even if he thinks he does.” Trump reminded his supporters that Zelenskyi is in the United States and said that the Ukrainian leader was making “unpleasant slander against your beloved president – me.”

On September 26, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi will hold two separate meetings with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House. He will inform them of his “plan to win” the war against Russia. Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities planned that Zelensky would introduce this plan to Donald Trump.

Ukraine also hopes that Biden will change his position on long-range weapons and allow their use on targets on the territory of Russia.
