The average salary of a university associate professor in Ukraine is UAH 14,500 / photo UNIANIn Ukraine, a docent at a “clean” university currently receives about 14,500 hryvnias. The Ministry of Education and Science is currently working to increase the salaries of scientific and pedagogical workers. Mykola Trofymenko, the former rector of the Mariupol State University and now the deputy minister of higher education, told about this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
“A university associate professor – a person with a scientific degree and academic rank and years of service – receives about 14.5 thousand hryvnias net. Today, there are a lot of opportunities in universities, a lot of partnership and financing programs,” he said.
According to the official, an associate professor who is ready to give lectures abroad, knows English and can be a project manager of the university’s international program, “can earn much, much more.”
“But, without a doubt, the salary needs to be reviewed. We are currently working very actively with the Verkhovna Rada and the President’s Office to increase the salary for scientific and pedagogical workers,” said Trofymenko.
He added that the ministry expects that the budget for 2026 will provide for an increase in teachers’ salaries:
“We are working on this with all structures so that when raising salaries for teachers, university teachers must be in the field of vision.”
Salaries of education workersAs UNIAN previously reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi promised to raise teachers’ salaries next year. “We are working separately and in great detail in the field of education in order to ensure salary increases for teachers in schools and teachers in higher education institutions next year,” he emphasized.
The MES also announced that they want to raise teachers’ salaries already in 2026. According to the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Nadiya Kuzmychova, the department has developed a new system of remuneration for educators, which provides not only a salary increase, but also a change in the calculation principle. The innovation will apply to school teachers, kindergarten teachers and teachers of professional educational institutions. But, it was noted, the new system will be introduced gradually and under favorable conditions.
We also wrote that a teacher is one of the lowest paid professions in Ukraine. The typical salary of teachers in September was UAH 12,500, which is 8.7% more than last year. Meanwhile, according to OLX Robota’s research, in neighboring Poland, depending on the category and seniority, a teacher’s salary ranges from 5,000 to 7,300 zlotys, or 57,000 to 83,000 UAH.
