Duduzile Zuma denies involvement in any Russian recruiting campaign / screenshotOne of the daughters of former South African president Jacob Zuma has resigned as a member of parliament after reports that she recruited young men to serve in Russian forces in the war against Ukraine. Bloomberg writes about it.
The Umkonto weSizwe party said Duduzile Zuma would fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. It denies involvement in any Russian recruitment campaign, while the party had no involvement in the war in Ukraine at all, the party added.
“We respect the actions of the authorities,” party chairman Nathi Nhleko said.
Nkosazana Zuma-Ncube, another daughter of Zuma, is said to have filed criminal charges against her half-sister and two others last week for allegedly luring the men to Russia and handing them over to a mercenary group to fight in Ukraine without their knowledge and consent.
The plight of the men first became known after President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered an investigation into the recruitment of South African citizens to participate in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Duduzile Zuma – what is known about herDuduzile Zuma has previously been linked to Russian social media campaigns, where she posted in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin. She is currently under investigation for treason for inciting violence on social media in 2021, when an estimated 350 people died in riots after her father was jailed for contempt of court.
A group of about 20 men from South Africa and Botswana approached by Duduzile Zuma traveled to Russia in July after receiving an offer to train as bodyguards to work for her father’s political party. According to some relatives, they signed military contracts in Russian, were sent to the front in Ukraine and lost contact with their families in August.
Earlier this month, the Ramaphosa administration announced that 17 South Africans stranded in Ukraine’s Donbas region had appealed to the South African government for help.
