Those negotiations, which took place in May-July, were actually just an imitation to deceive the Americans.
Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Serhiy Kyslytsia / screenshotThe peace talks between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, which began in May this year in Istanbul, have now come to a complete halt. No progress has been achieved on this path, Serhii Kyslytsia, First Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said in an interview with The Times.
According to him, during the three rounds of negotiations in Istanbul, which took place on May 16, June 2, and July 23, the Russians rejected the very fact of the existence of the Ukrainian nation and presented their aggression as a war between Russians and Russians.
Kyslytsia noted that the members of the Ukrainian delegation decided to ignore all the historical lectures of the Russians and tried to discuss the essence of the matter – the way to peace. But the Russians evaded it. For example, the Russians proposed to create working groups on WhatsApp in order to fool the Americans by the very fact of their existence: they say, the work process is going on, new sanctions are not needed.
“You have to present your arguments, and then the other side also presents theirs. Then you try to find out where is the common ground? What is the gray area? Where is that group of arguments that are completely unacceptable? We never got to that point,” Kyslytsia said.
Peace negotiations are possible only with PutinAs the peace talks ended without much progress, they have now been suspended. According to Kyslytsia, since the summer, Ukraine has focused on putting more pressure on Russia from Ukraine’s international partners. The goal is to force Putin to meet with Zelensky, because only in this format will it be possible to conduct real peace negotiations.
“It is important to understand that in the conditions of a dictatorship, you cannot have creative discussions with negotiating groups that represent the dictator. They have a very strict mandate and must defend any position they are given. In addition, people controlled each other, and then reported on each other, how harshly they expressed their position,” Kislytsia said, adding that in Russia such strategic decisions are made only by the dictator.
War in Ukraine: strategic perspectivesAs UNIAN wrote, US President Donald Trump was unable to end the war between Russia and Ukraine due to the wrong approach. He tried to conclude an agreement that would recognize part of the territorial gains of the Russian Federation, but, according to observers, Trump did not understand the true intentions of Putin, who seeks the destruction of independent Ukraine. Because of this, the peace talks collapsed.
Analysts note that Putin will not change his position even in spite of increasing sanctions and losses at the front. Trump is likely to try less to help Kyiv win than to restore diplomacy, perhaps through a global peace summit. According to experts, the war is unlikely to end quickly, but gradual diplomatic steps can create conditions for its settlement without destroying Ukraine.
