Pep Guardiola’s team played a magnificent first half: Tijani Reynders (37) and Phil Foden (44) brought the advantage of the guests to three goals, but in stoppage time, Emil Smith-Row reduced the deficit to 1:3.
The start of the second half again passed under the dictation of City: Foden scored a double in the 48th, and later Doku’s shot ricocheted off Berge to make it 5-1.
It looked like the intrigue was dead… but Fulgham made a real frenzy! First, Iwobi scored the second on the 57th, and the substitution of Samuel Chukwueze turned out to be simply golden: the Nigerian scored a double (73rd and 78th minutes), reducing the deficit of the “cottages” to a minimum of 4:5.
In the final minutes, the hosts could have snatched a draw, but Guardiol cleared the ball off the goal line in stoppage time after King’s shot. City still held on for the win, at least temporarily closing the gap on Arsenal to two points.
