The 45-year-old Cuban-American actor announced the news on Instagram in a joint post with fiancée Bonnie Leathers.
‘I guess prayer n persistence really do work,’ he wrote in the caption on Monday, adding, ‘Thank you for bringing me my best friend. This one’s ALL YOU … ☺️.’
There were two photos: a snapshot of the happy couple smiling side-by-side, and a closeup shot of the actress showing of her diamond ring in front of the ocean.
Bonnie commented under the post, ‘Mrs Ramirez loading…. prayed for you and the love we have, baby. So proud and blessed to be your future wife ❤️.’
J.R. was previously in a long-term relationship with his co-star Melissa Roxburgh but they quietly split.
In their social media post, the future spouses geotagged their location as Playa Flamenco in Puerto Rico.
Friends and fans alike shared their well wishes in the comments, including Manifest actor Matt Long, who said, ‘Congratulations!!’
Emily VanCamp, who used to star on the show Revenge, wrote, ‘So happy for you guys.’
Meanwhile, former Reba star JoAnna Garcia Swisher added, ‘CONGRATULATIONS!!!!’
It’s not clear how long J.R. and Bonnie dated before the TV star popped the question.
However, the model’s earliest online post featuring her husband-to-be was shared in December 2024.
Last year she shared a selfie on Instagram with her then-boyfriend in Paris, France, and captioned, ‘Paris Mon Amour ❤️.’
And this past September, she uploaded a photo with J.R. and wrote, ‘Treat me like a princess and I’m yours,’ per People.
On Thursday the beauty shared a video montage of their Puerto Rico trip and reflected on her surprise engagement.
She used Beyonce and Lady Gaga’s 2009 hit song Telephone as the soundtrack as she captioned, ‘Kind of busy…. simply went to Puerto Rico to mind my business and tan… and somehow returned engaged??!

J.R. and his ex-girlfriend Melissa were initially romantically linked in January 2020, with a source telling Page Six at the time, ‘They are dating. They met on set and have been dating for at least six months.’
In December 2022 they shared photos from a Fiji vacation, and in May 2023 J.R. posted an Instagram selfie of the pair kissing.
It’s unknown exactly when they ended their relationship.
