On Saturday, hackers attacked about ten official websites in Italy, including those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and two Milan airports, temporarily stopping their work. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the Cyber Security Agency of Italy. Pro-Russian hacker group Noname057(16) claimed responsibility for the Telegram cyberattack, saying Italian “Russophobes are getting a well-deserved cyber response.” A spokesman for Italy’s cyber security agency said it was likely that the so-called “distributed denial of service attack” (DDoS) could be linked to a pro-Russian group. During such attacks, hackers try to overload the network with unusually high volumes of data traffic in order to paralyze its operation. A spokesman said the agency provided immediate assistance to institutions and firms affected by the attack and that the impact of the attack was “mitigated” in less than two hours. The cyberattack did not cause any disruptions to flights at Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports, said a representative of SEA, which manages these airports. While the websites were down, the airports’ mobile apps continued to function, the SEA official added.
