On Holodomor Day, which Ukrainians commemorate every year on the fourth Saturday of November, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the country’s first lady Olena Zelenska honored the memory of millions of Ukrainians who died from hunger. – Fourth Saturday of November. Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Famine. In 1921, 1922 and 1923. In 1946 and 1947. And in the most terrible years of 1932 and 1933, when the famine deliberately created by the regime took the lives of millions of our people. Our duty is to remember, recall and tell the world the truth about the brutal crime, about the genocide, which was committed against Ukrainians. Bright memory to all the victims: adults and children – innocent victims of the Holodomors, Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.
Thus, the presidential couple took part in a prayer service and a walk from the Pechersk Lavra to the Holodomor Museum in Kyiv. To the ringing of the bells, the Zelenskys laid bouquets of ears of wheat at the memorial to the victims of the Holodomor. The event was also attended by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak, Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga and other government officials.
In the 20th century, the Ukrainian people experienced three Holodomors, the largest of which was the famine of 1932-1933. About 3.9 million of our citizens died then, including a million children under the age of 10. According to historians, 13% of the total population of Ukraine became victims of the Holodomor. In 2006, the Verkhovna Rada recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
Every year, Ukrainians traditionally light candles on the windowsills of their houses at 4:00 p.m. to commemorate the victims of the Holodomor. Also on this day, hundreds of people gather near the National Holodomor Genocide Museum in Kyiv to lay flowers and ears of corn at the memorial to Ukrainians who died of hunger.
- On October 3, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously adopted a resolution entitled “Commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor – Ukraine again faces the threat of genocide”, 80 – “for”.
- On November 23, Ukrainians commemorate the victims of the Holodomor, which took the lives of millions of our citizens. On this day, Ukrainian families traditionally light a candle in their homes.
