Ukraine, together with 59 countries, joined the Joint Statement of Support for the strict implementation of the provisions of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. In particular, it is about banning the use of chemical means of fighting riots as a method of waging war.
This is reported on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
The statement was announced during the 29th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
“We fully share the position that the use of chemical weapons and chemical means of fighting riots as a method of warfare constitutes a gross violation of the norms of international law and endangers the achievement of a world free of chemical weapons. We highly appreciate the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and States -partners, aimed at proving the facts of the Russian Federation’s use of chemical anti-riot means as a means of waging war against Ukraine,” the message reads.
A recent report by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed the presence of chemical elements that belong to anti-riot means and are regularly used by the Russian Federation on the front line, the ministry said. This is contrary to the requirements of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
“The joint statement draws particular attention to these violations – numerous reports of the Russian Federation’s use of chemical riot control agents and other toxic chemicals on the front line in Ukraine. The Ukrainian side has documented 4,950 cases of the Russian Federation’s use of munitions in the period from February 2023 contain dangerous chemicals,” the message says.
In a joint statement, the participating states confirm their readiness to support strengthening the capacity of the OPCW Technical Secretariat to provide assistance to Ukraine and respond to the use of chemical weapons during the war with the Russian Federation.
For the second year in a row, the Russian Federation did not join the executive board of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
And Russian troops have recently increased the number of systematic executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war. In addition, the enemy uses chemical weapons at the front.
