EU High Representative Josep Borrell said Russia’s war against Ukraine has changed Europe, forcing it to focus on its own strength and ability to defend itself.
This is reported by Ukrinform.
According to the high representative of the EU, Europeans perceive Russia’s war against Ukraine as a real threat to their security.
“You start thinking in terms of power when you feel the breath of war and threat. That is why the war in Ukraine transformed Europe. It made us realize the importance of strength, for the first time since World War II. Danger, threat, fear – all this materialized in an undeniable way… The brutality of the Russian invasion helped us to achieve a unified understanding of the threat, because for a certain time the Russian threat did not have the same meaning in Riga and in Lisbon – geography in this sense is of great importance.” – Borrell said during a speech during a meeting under the auspices of the Foreign Affairs Council on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
As Borrell points out, Europeans have realized that common interests are worth protecting and that collective efforts are more effective.
He also emphasized that NATO will remain the basis of European security, but the EU should strengthen its strategic autonomy, strengthening the European component of the Alliance while simultaneously developing the capabilities of European countries in defense and defense production.
