European leaders are trying to convince Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi not to agree to a possible agreement on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas without reliable security guarantees from the United States.
This is reported by Bloomberg.
According to the publication, Europe’s main goal is to avoid a situation where Zelensky, under US pressure, will be forced to withdraw troops from Donbas and agree to an agreement without serious American security guarantees.
European diplomats believe that such a scenario could create a strategic vacuum and threaten the security of the entire region. Representatives of several European countries are expected to travel to Washington in the coming days to discuss these risks with the US administration.
Currently, Europe is following the tactic of publicly supporting American initiatives, hoping that Moscow itself will derail potential negotiations. However, according to the publication, this approach exhausts itself, and it is not known whether there is a backup plan.
Bloomberg also notes that the British side believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with American special representative Steve Witkoff, rejected the US proposals because they were “too favorable for Ukraine.”
European diplomats admit that recent contacts with American and Ukrainian representatives are not easy. At the same time, they are preparing for a possible scenario in which Donald Trump, in the event of failure to reach an agreement, may actually withdraw from the issue of war.
Bloomberg warns: there is a risk that the US will withdraw from the process altogether, leaving Europe alone with the problem of further support for Ukraine. In this case, the EU countries will have to decide whether they are able to provide Kyiv with the necessary military and financial assistance.
At the same time, the publication emphasizes that it is still unclear whether Europe can form a viable long-term financing mechanism for Ukraine.
On December 6, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke for two hours with the advisors of the American President Donald Trump — Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. During the conversation, issues of territories and possible security guarantees were discussed.
December 4 Volodymyr Zelenskyi chatted with the President of the European Council, Antonio Koshta, regarding the upcoming meeting of the Ukrainian team with the American side.
