Russia continues to attack not only the infrastructure of Ukraine, but also its cultural heritage. About 2 million objects of cultural value are under occupation, and more than 1,700 institutions, including museums, theaters and libraries, have already been destroyed.

This was announced by the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochytskyi at the forum “Diplomacy Today: Ukraine’s Role in Global Politics”.

According to Mykola Tochytsky, Russian aggression is aimed not only at the physical destruction of infrastructure, but also at the destruction of Ukrainian national identity.

“Where is our contemplative enemy aiming? He aims not only at houses, he aims at our identity with you. About two million elements of our cultural heritage are now under occupation,” the minister said.

The minister emphasized that the occupiers are systematically taking Ukrainian cultural treasures to Russia. They are trying to rewrite history, appropriating the achievements of Ukrainian culture.

“In one or another part, starting from the Chernihiv principality, all this is exported to Moscow or St. Petersburg. They seek to prove that Russia is the basis of our history. But this is absolutely untrue,” Tochytsky emphasized.

Mykola Tochytskyi also reported that about 1,700 art and cultural institutions have already been destroyed as a result of the war in Ukraine.

“We all know and remember the Mariupol Drama Theater, but there are already thousands of such institutions,” he said.

Among these objects are museums, theaters, libraries, architectural monuments, which are an integral part of the national heritage.

Large-scale destruction and theft of cultural values testify to the intentions of the aggressor to destroy the identity of Ukraine as an independent state. Preserving cultural heritage and documenting the crimes of the occupiers remain key tasks for Ukraine in wartime conditions.

In October, it was reported that 1,169 monuments of cultural heritage were damaged in Ukraine due to the full-scale Russian invasion. 22 of them were injured in September.

Recently, in Kyiv, the Barban estate received the status of a newly discovered object of cultural heritage of the capital. Activists spent three years lobbying for this issue.

In addition, the tradition of performing the ritual male dance “Serben” in the village of Chortovets was included in the National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
