The city authorities of Chernivtsi declared that the company “Luzhansky Distillery” carries out illegal discharges of waste into the city sewers, from where untreated effluents enter the Prut River.
City Mayor Roman Klichuk announced this on Facebook.
“For the second year already, the residents of Chernivtsi suffer from the stench. Today, the main cause of the stench is the discharge into our sewers of waste from the Luzhansk distillery, which operates without treatment facilities at all. The substance they drain is called barda. It is an extremely toxic product of alcohol processing. This poison completely destroys the microflora at the treatment plants. Because of this, the city’s waste is not properly processed, it enters the Prut and an incredible stench,” said the mayor.
According to him, the police opened criminal proceedings at the request of the city council.
Klichuk also noted that fines and periodic blocking of the company’s sewers do not produce results – “their guards simply break the seals and continue to pour poison.”
The mayor added that, in his opinion, the situation could have been resolved more quickly if the head of the Mamaivsk community had contacted the police, but she “removed herself”, because in the event of a shutdown of the enterprise, part of Luzhany may remain without drainage.
At the same time, the city council notes that the complete disconnection of the Mamaiv community from the drainage system may create problems for other local enterprises and lead to lawsuits against the Chernivtsi Water Canal.
The Chernivtsi City Council considers possible ways out of the situation: the appeal of the head of the Mamaiv community to the police, the decision of the regional commission of TEB and National Emergency, or the court decision, which should be announced tomorrow, December 9, and “which has been postponed for two months for unknown reasons.”
The Ukrinform correspondent tried to get comments from the leadership of the Mamaiv community and the director of the Luzhan distillery, but the phone numbers listed in official sources do not match.
