Meloni promised to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression until the end, but Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini questioned the feasibility of continuing support.
Interlocutors claim that the decree on aid to Ukraine was on the agenda of the meeting on Wednesday, December 3, dedicated to the preparation of the government meeting the next day, but it was removed because the agenda was already too full.
As noted, the special authorization regime currently allows the government to act without obtaining parliamentary approval for each new round of military supplies. The current decree expires at the end of the year.
It should be noted that on December 1, the interdepartmental decree on 12 package of military aid Ukraine from Italy entered into force.
George Maloney’s government has previously sent 11 aid packages since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, totaling between €2.5bn and €3bn.
According to unofficial data, Italy handed over two batteries of SAMP/T air defense systems to Kyiv.
In October, it was reported that the 12th package of military aid to Ukraine from Italy may be ready by the end of 2025.
In addition, Italy signaled that is ready to join the NATO initiative PURL regarding the purchase of American weapons, in particular Patriot missiles, at the expense of European funds.
