This statement was made in the context of Freuding’s description of the growing uncertainty about the role of the United States in Europe. According to the magazine, he cited as an example the fact that Berlin did not receive a warning about Washington’s decision to suspend the supply of certain types of weapons to Ukraine.
Now he has to resort to complex, indirect channels to get up-to-date information on the US government’s position.
“There is a person in our embassy in Washington who is trying to find someone in the Pentagon,” the newspaper quoted Freunding as saying.
The general made his comments as part of a comprehensive analysis of the security situation in Germany, in which several military leaders assessed the change in American policy under Donald Trump’s presidency.
According to the analysis, the German government and the Bundeswehr are watching with concern that the US is increasingly shifting the focus of its security policy domestically and putting more responsibility on Europe.
In the article, Freuding is described as a person who always considered the support of the US to be the basis of European security. Therefore, the loss of high-speed communication channels is an “alarm signal” for him, especially given the possible scenarios of a Russian attack on NATO partners in Eastern Europe.
Other German military officials quoted in the article expressed similar concerns about the loss of credibility in the transatlantic relationship.
Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz previously stated that in the relations between Europe and the USA a “deep split” appearedand also warned about the threat from China and systemic challenges to the world order, which require a unified European response.
We will remind:
- November 5 in Germany the first meeting was held of the newly created National Security Council.
- At the first meeting of the National Security Council of Germany, the main focus was on the adoption of the “interagency action plan for countering hybrid threats.”
