The Oval Office meeting, where participants began arriving shortly before 5 p.m. (local time – ed.), took place amid increased U.S. pressure on Venezuela with strikes on vessels believed to be drug carriers and a build-up of a military presence in the Caribbean.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said earlier Monday that Trump was “meeting with his national security team on this issue and many other issues,” adding that “maintaining peace around the world is part of his responsibilities.”
Prehistory: The day before, Trump told reporters that he had a phone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Earlier, the American leader announced the strengthening of the fight against Venezuelan drug traffickers.
On November 29, Trump declared the airspace over Venezuela “completely closed”, this may indicate US military plans against this country.
Trump also said that the United States would “very soon” begin to take measures to stop the ground movement of Venezuelans suspected of drug trafficking.
