The national coordinator of the MK party, Nathi Nhleko, told reporters that the police force was not involved in the recruitment of mercenaries for the Russian Federation. He stressed that Zuma-Sambudla’s resignation is not an admission of guilt, but the party intends to help the families of the recruited men.
“The national government has accepted the resignation of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and supports her efforts to ensure that these young South Africans are safely returned to their families,” he said.
The ex-deputy herself was present at the press conference, but did not make speeches or respond to the accusations.
The scandal erupted after the politician’s half-sister asked the police to investigate Zuma-Sambudla and two others, accusing them of involvement in recruitment.
In November, the South African government reported that 17 citizens of the country were stuck in the occupied part of the Ukrainian Donbass. The men were tricked into fighting on the side of the Russian occupiers under the pretext of lucrative labor contracts.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, more than 1,400 mercenaries from three dozen African countries are fighting on the side of Russia.
