“According to the results of the meeting, a decision was made on the development of the Ostrovetsk NPP, the implementation of the second phase – the construction of the third power unit. And in parallel, work will be organized to research sites in the Mogilev region (…) where the development of nuclear energy is possible in the future under the conditions of an increase in energy consumption,” said the official.

The power station in the city of Ostrovets, located in the west of the Grodno region, is located 15 km from the border with Lithuania and has been criticized for security problems, primarily from neighboring countries and international organizations.

Prehistory:

  • The first power unit was launched in 2020, the second was connected to the Belarusian power system in 2023. The station was built by the Russian state company Rosatom, the project was financed by Moscow.
  • Back in 2017, the Lithuanian Seimas legislated that the Belarusian nuclear power plant is dangerous and poses a threat to national security, the environment and human health. The three Baltic countries eventually agreed to boycott electricity from the Bel NPP before they were disconnected from the Belarusian power system.
